Organizational Development

FECOFUN has expanded its network to encompass nearly every district in Nepal.  It is through this network that FECOFUN is able to deliver services to its members.  FECOFUN continues to work on expanding and strengthening its grassroots base, and on establishing transparent and consistent policies and procedures at all levels.  An important aspect of this is to increase its organizational salience – that is, its importance to and value for local people – through tangible activities and other forms of support for community forestry user groups. 

The organizational development of FECOFUN is as follows: · Formation and development of 74 district chapters · Formation of more than Five hundred Fifty range post level FECOFUN. · Including all level of FECOFUN more than ten thousands people have taken the responsibility of executive committee · Till 30 Aug 2006 ten thousands two hundred and forty four community forest user groups have been affiliated in FECOFUN. · More than 1.1 million household and 64 lakh people have been indirectly involved in FECOFUN.

Examples of FECOFUN activities include

  • Support for district branches and community forestry user group members, such as the preparation and revision of user group constitutions and operational plans, conflict mediation, and income-generation activities.
  • Training sessions on: good governance; leadership skills; community forestry policy and legal provisions; management and use of community forests; harvesting and marketing of NTFPs; forest inventory methods; environment and biodiversity.
  • Publication and distribution of policy briefing papers and copies of Nepal’s forestry legislation
  • Litigation in the Supreme, appellate and district courts to safeguard the rights of forest users.

In addition, FECOFUN has also been involved the following

  1. Women’s empowerment and leadership development programs.
  2. Legal advice and assistance.
  3. National-level advocacy and lobbying.
  4. Collaborations with researchers, academics, and others, through research, documentation, networking, and exchange visits or study tours.
  5. Interaction programs with Members of Parliament, as well as national level political parties and their leaders.
  6. Formation of a national NTFP network
